Is there anything more quintessentially British than Fish & Chips?
As it would have been such a shame to have missed out the trademark English dish, we went in search of some of the best Fish & Chips houses. Lucky as I am, turns out that my lovely quaint neighborhood, good ol' Spitalfields, housed one of London's top Fish & Chip stores. Stepping a dainty foot gingerly over the sky blue threshold, I knew on sight that it would be one of my frequent haunts in London.
Decorated like a 50's diner, Poppies' color palette is a soft pastel blue contrasted against black and white checker-board tiles. Red and white striped life-saving rings, framed photographs of old movie stars and a miscellany of memorabilia dot the walls . As retro music hummed softly from the jukebox in the corner, I patiently waited as the delicious sizzling of fish and chips hissed and filled my ears.
Though anticipation and hunger may not have ensured that I was the fairest judge of taste, I must say that the fish was succulent, soft and crisp. The cod itself was slightly tasteless, which is a problem easily solved with the addition of tartare sauce, it was easily the best deep fried fish I have ever tasted. The Chips were quite scrumptious as well, each packed with a strong solid taste of English potatoes. What truly surprised me was how much I enjoyed the fresh seasonal salad, each leaf and vegetable was brisk, fresh and tasteful, a perfect meal in itself even without the Fish & Chips.
So fellow readers, if you're on the lookout or harboring a craving for a plate of Fish & Chips, I heartily recommend Poppies of Spitalfields with its adorable atmosphere and crisp and sweet tasting Fish & Chips, definitely a fabulous place for a casual lunch with the girls!
